This cantata was written for Easter Sunday, presumably in 1708 in Mühlhausen. It was later adapted for a performance in 1724 in the churches of Saint Thomas and Saint Nicholas in Leipzig. Both the lyrics and the music of seven verses of the song 'Christ lag in Todesbanden' (1424) are adaptations by Luther of the 11th century 'Victimi Pascali Laudes' and 'Christ ist erstanden'.
It is generally doubted that Bach truely composed this cantata. The name of Johann christoph Bach is often mentioned in this respect.
