This cantata is composed for the first Sunday after Trinity. Traditionally, during this day, Luke 16:19-31 and John 4:16-21 are read. Both lectures deal with the care for others. It was performed for the first time on june 23, 1726. The text of the opening choir derives from Isaiah 58:7-8. A striking feature of this piece is the continuing appearance of two similar notes directly after another. Possibly , Bach wanted to express with this the breaking of the bread in twain.
