From April 2nd, the Art Center proudly presents a monographic exhibition on Pieterjan Grasmaijer (1950-2017). Grasmaijer was trained at the Rietveld Academy with, among others, his contemporary Melle Boerrigter. Both artists were strongly influenced by Jheronimus Bosch in general, and his sexual symbolism in particular. Unlike Melle, Grasmaijer was a modest artist. His work has therefore remained largely unknown for a long time. Now for the first time a major exhibition focuses extensively and exclusively on his drawings and paintings. In all his works of art, Grasmaijer’s aptitude as a draughtsman is self-explanatory. With a hard pencil he accurately set up his drawings. He never had to look for the right shape through sketching. He left many hundreds of drawings, a selection of which can now be seen in the JBAC. Some of his paintings are also on display. A unique opportunity to discover this underrated artist. The exhibition will run until January 7, 2024.
Simultaneously with the opening of the retrospective exhibition of the work of Pieterjan Grasmaijer (1950-2017), a monograph on his life and work will be launched. 'Pieterjan Grasmaijer tekenende schilder ' is a collaboration between Tom Eyzenbach, Jos Koldeweij and Ella Vervelde. There is also a contribution from Saskia de Bodt. Like the exhibition, the monograph is a reflection of his entire oeuvre. Besides an overview of the many drawings he made during his life, there is special attention for his paintings, book cover illustrations and alphabet. The influence of Jheronimus Bosch on the work of Grasmaijer is also extensively discussed, a relationship that was recognizable in the explicit erotic drawings. The most characteristic aspect of Grasmaijer's work remains the wonderfully skillful and detailed drawings that he created with the accurate lines of his hard pencil.
