The 4th International Jheronimus Bosch Conference took place in the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center in 's-Hertogenbosch in April 2016. The first conference, 'Jheronimus Bosch Revealed', was organised by the City Archives of 's-Hertogenbosch in 2001. The second and third conferences, 'Jheronimus Bosch - His Sources' and 'His Patrons and his Public' were organised by the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center in 2007 and 2012 respectively. The 2016 title and central theme was 'Jheronimus Bosch - His Life and his Work'. Over the course of three days, 28 lectures were given by presenters from 10 different countries for a highly international public, with participants from 5 continents. The large majority of these papers are printed in this volume. This resulted in a wide variety of fascinating and important essays, several of which report on recent conservation treatments.
The Jheronimus Bosch Art Center opened its doors on 26 March 2007. This permanent institution, founded in the city where Jheronimus Bosch lived and worked all his life, focuses on the legacy of this famous painter, bringing it collectively to the attention of a wider audience. Jheronimus Bosch's complete oeuvre is on view - all his paintings and drawings - in the form of high quality and life-size photographical reproductions. However, Bosch's works seldom speak for themselves and therefore we try to draw on the artistic and historical context in which Bosch lived.
